Why NTA, NCERT and CBSE Need Academic Leadership Instead of Bureaucratic Control
Recent controversies at NTA, NCERT and CBSE raise concerns about accountability, autonomy, and the need for academic leadership.on Jun 05, 2026
India's education system is one of the nation's proudest accomplishments. Groups like NCERT, CBSE, and NTA are key to millions of kids' futures. Built on smart teaching and independent thinking, these groups have been respected for years. Still, some recent scandals are making people wonder if these organizations are actually in good hands.
There's trouble coming from NCERT, CBSE, and NTA. These problems bring up questions about who's in charge, how ready they are, and if they can be trusted.
For example, NCERT got flak for a textbook chapter called "Corruption in Judiciary." This showed up in an 8th-grade social studies book. Things got worse when the Supreme Court asked how that content was okayed in the first place. Critics think even if outsiders help write stuff, NCERT should check everything. So this incident shows that there are issues with who owns the material and how well it's looked over.
CBSE has been under scrutiny since rolling out On-Screen Marking (OSM) for Class XII exams. There wasn't much prep before the launch, causing worry among students, parents, and teachers. Since these exam results influence higher education choices, any hitches could really impact learners negatively. This situation raises concerns about how thoroughly major education changes are planned and discussed.
NTA also keeps facing flak for managing national entrance tests like NEET. Past issues include problems with test conduct and leaked papers. Even so, a lot of people think the organization hasn't adequately worked to earn back the public's trust. Many critics claim there needs to be more emphasis on being open, accountable, and focused on student well-being to regain confidence in these exams.
At the core of all these arguments is whether schools should be run by career officials or by experts in the education field.
Supporters of academic leadership say school leaders need a deep grasp of teaching methods, tests, teacher training, and what kids need. They think big educational choices should come from smart academic advice, not just what’s easy to manage.
As India keeps working on the NEP 2020 aims, having admins make fair calls based on solid academics is getting more crucial. Everyone—from students to teachers to parents—hopes schools will stay trustworthy, open about their work, and focused on being the very best. Their top job is making sure kids come first in all choices.
